SHITTY LITTLE TOWN ❅ PLOTTING POST

The town is bleak. While there’s no indication that this was ever a metropolis, once upon a time it was thriving enough to be capable of sustaining cute college town boutiques like haberdasheries and crystal shops. By now, most of those small mom-and-pops are out of business, and those that aren’t are barely surviving the death by a thousand cuts of trumped-up citations and ever-increasing rent payments. The population is about two thousand, so while not everybody knows everybody, almost everybody is two degrees of separation from each other and gossip travels quickly.
It’s Appalachia. It’s rural, it’s run-down, it’s creepy. The ditches along the sides of the roads are filled with trash and old, abandoned cars that have been reclaimed by the overgrown plant life. There are caves and abandoned mineshafts littering the undeveloped land. There’s farmland, but for the most part it’s fallow or used exclusively to raise the pigs and sheep for the slaughterhouse. Most socializing seems to be done at bars and churches, and the general vibe is one of depression, hopelessness and resentment as the locals see their wages worth less and less and their prospects for improving their lives remain just out of reach.
The main sources of industry in this town are coal mining and mutton, but as demand for both of those products has gone down over the years, the town’s wealth has concentrated in the hands of Ms. Cygne, the slaughterhouse owner and town matriarch, and Mr. Goluboy, a tech bro millionaire who owns MineCorp, which continues extracting minerals. Ms. Cygne and Mr. Goluboy also compose the entirety of the town council, as everyone else quit or was bullied out.
Nobody new has come to the town for years and no one seems to have left or even attempted to leave for years. Animal maulings and accidents in the mines are an occasional cause of death. Because of these maulings, a strict sundown curfew is enforced by the sheriff; those caught violating the curfew are immediately jailed for their own safety, and fined for the use of police resources.
MECHANICS

MEMORY LOSS
THIS IS A MEMORY-LOSS PLOT. The myths are, for mysterious reasons, being brainwashed and forced to forget their roles, their relationships, and their backstories; while the myths don’t have to believe that they’ve lived in this town forever, they shouldn’t remember each other as myths or becoming a Guardian at all. The myths will believe themselves to be a resident of the town and may be an established person with a business or social circle. They may feel a general sense of dysphoria or unease with their new role, even if they can’t articulate why it feels “off.” Their background is likely to be something that loosely matches their canon background, but with the magic or sci-fi space future removed. Non-human characters are human for the duration of this plot.
TOWNSFOLK
These townsfolk aren’t necessarily bad people, but they’re worn down by the economic stress of their situation and have developed a culture of judgment, gossip, insularity, nosiness and close-mindedness. It’s alarmingly easy to become a social pariah based on nothing but rumors. They have a virulent case of Tall Poppy Syndrome and resent those with more than them – more money, more education, more life experience, so on. They frequently look for outsiders to feel better than. Typically, their topics of conversation are gossiping about others, tales of drunken escapades, and tough-guy posturing about how they would rid the town of undesirables if they were in charge. They don’t seem terribly interested in talking about the maulings or what’s in the woods, but some will speculate if pushed. They will report any deviance they see to the sheriff with haste, pausing only to inform their entire social circle first.
NPCS

Ms. Cygne is the owner of the slaughterhouse, which has been in her family for generations. Positioned as the town philanthropist and matriarch, Ms. Cygne’s special program is to identify promising youngsters and setting them up for a free ride at a prestigious boarding school out of town. The youths she selects are sent off to school and are only heard from in the form of bland, happy letters home a few times a year. Each year, she hosts a debut ball where she meets all the youths. She owns all the subsistence businesses, the hospital, and the grocery and convenience stores. She has a benevolent, motherly image. Her daughter, Odette Mallard, is the sheriff.

Mr. Goluboy is a womanizing, hipster millionaire heir who owns MineCorp, the company that manages the coal mines. He owns almost all the residential property and is a very aggressive landlord who targets small business owners violating minor business codes. His ex-girlfriend was sent to prison – and never heard from again – after Mr. Goluboy’s wife was found murdered. Mr. Goluboy wants to buy up the undeveloped land and farmland, including Warren Family Farms, to turn into a series of McMansions, which he says will help drive business in the downtown. Let him tell you about crypto.

Ms. Cygne’s daughter Odette is very letter-of-the-law and claims to never play favorites; she will refer constantly to whatever ordinance she’s enforcing and claim her hands are tied. Effectively, this means that she’s the council’s attack dog, because she’s tasked with ticketing and shuttering businesses over extremely minor violations (receipts signed in blue ink instead of black! Liquor license not displayed prominently enough!) at Goluboy and Cygne’s behest. She and her deputies enforce the curfew very strictly.
LOCATIONS
NOG'S BAR
Nog’s bar is the preferred haunt of most of the miners and slaughterhouse workers in this town, who meet to drink their woes away, complain about their supervisors and speculate on the personal lives of the people around them. Despite Mr. Goluboy’s constant harassment, Nog has managed to keep his liquor license, and as such is one of the few successful businesses in town on account of all the stress-induced alcoholism. While one won’t find fancy cocktails here, if they’re just looking for a beer and some scuttlebutt, this is the place.
THE DINER
“Auntie’s” is the name of the old-school, 1950’s-esque, 24-hour diner in the middle of downtown, with big red pleather booths, checkerboard floors and a jukebox. Typically, the only difference in clientele between Auntie’s and Nog’s is that the people at Auntie’s wanted a burger or a stack of pancakes alongside their beer – but unlike Nog’s, Auntie’s is only barely hanging on, constantly getting ticketed for waterspots on the silverware and not having enough napkins. Thankfully, one can get a full breakfast meal at Auntie’s any time of day for a few dollars.
MS. CYGNE'S MANSION
Ms. Cygne’s mansion is the largest, most opulent house in the town, with a dozen bedrooms and a ballroom. A gorgeous balcony overlooks the lake. Ms. Cygne hosts her debut ball in her ballroom once a year, and frequently invites youths that she thinks may be eligible for her scholarship to tour her grounds and see what a life of “proper upbringing” could give them. Her land includes a topiary maze and a pond full of swans, and the gate at the end of her long driveway has a crest of a swan in wrought iron.
THE DOCKS
The town is alongside a lake, and once upon a time there was enough fish to sustain a modest fishing economy and a river that allowed for trade by boat with other nearby towns. However, with the mines’ pollution, fish are no longer considered safe to eat, and only the water immediately adjacent to the springhead on the Warren Family Farm is safe to swim in. Draining from the mines has lowered the level of the river enough that it’s no longer navigable. Residents will still occasionally use the lake for boating recreation, but fees at the marina keep going up (into Goluboy’s pocket) and mothers are increasingly worried about letting their children get wet in that water.
MINECORPS HEADQUARTERS
One of the two major employers in this town, owned by Mr. Goluboy. Mr. Goluboy goes out of his way to recruit talented scientific minds in the town to work on designing new mining techniques and equipment to try and extract the last bits of coal from the mines, or potentially discover a new source of product. Mr. Goluboy promises more interesting secret projects to those that serve the company well. People who particularly impress him with a scientific invention or business idea may be sponsored to leave town to initiate those adventures, at which point they will only ever communicate by sending blithe, content-free letters home every few months.
THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
The other major employer, owned by Ms. Cygne. Most of the locals who don’t work at the mines work at the slaughterhouse, where the work is disgusting, dreary and grueling. Sometimes people get promoted out of the trenches and into admin. Yay.
BIG TOP CIRCUS
Dick’s Coffeeshop, Big Top Circus, is in the bottom floor of an apartment building, and many locals have no idea how it hasn’t been shut down yet, given that the owner is famously generous with his resources in a way that clearly irritates the city council. Dick offers jobs to those who Goluboy and Cygne won’t hire at the mines or slaughterhouse and frequently sneaks day-old pastries to the hungry. The coffeeshop is one of the few areas where artists tend to converge, usually at the weekly open mic night; however, whatever one expresses at the coffeeshop is likely to be picked up by the town gossips, mocked relentlessly, distorted and spread around.
WARREN FAMILY FARMS AND FLORIST
The majority of farmland in town belongs to the old Warren Family farm, a sprawling acreage that includes the best producing fields in town, and much of the surrounding hills and undeveloped forest, including the spring that feeds the river. The Warren family, now almost entirely deceased, were never stingy about visitors to their property, and use of the woods for subsistence hunting and stealing from the fields is a source of food for many low-income families. The only hunting permitted in town is in the Warren hills, protected by private property rights against intrusion by the City Council and the Sheriff’s department, as the sole living owner refuses to press charges against trespassers. The property would make a wonderful subdivision of mansions to attract new town residents, or so Mr. Goluboy insists, whether or not he’s been asked, if only the owner would quit being so stingy and sell. The farm provides flowers for the only florist in town, where the owner is forbidden due to health code violations from selling produce, but where for a $5 daisy you can also get a free dozen eggs and produce basket, with a bar of the best chocolate you’ve ever tasted thrown in.
THE FARMER'S MARKET
Because Mr. Goluboy’s malicious prosecution of small businesses has essentially shut down any legal avenue for a farmer’s market, a few of the residents of the town have established a black market for homegrown fruits and vegetables, small-batch soaps and candles, and other small products. Words gets out through a whisper network, and a few times a month everyone in the know meets in a parking lot, opens their trunk, and does some bartering and selling with each other until they get found out. Sheriff Mallard and her deputies have arrested many people at these pop-ups and confiscated their products. By now, these pop-ups have around forty people trading and selling at a time, and the city council has announced that out of concerns for food safety the sentence for being caught vending homegrown produce will be increased to a misdemeanor with jail time.
THE LIBRARY
The library, once well-stocked and indulgently funded, is now kept alive sheerly by the passion of the one paid librarian, Aziraphale, and the volunteers who work there. There is no interlibrary loan program and there have been no new books in years. The library is reduced to loaning damaged copies missing pages, and story hours or public events are difficult to organize due to the complete lack of resources. The city council has also forced Aziraphale to put up a sign against loitering or using the library “for any purposes besides the borrowing of books.” An organization of local busybodies drops in frequently to comb through the stacks for “objectionable material”, which is then destroyed at Ms. Cygne’s behest.
THE SPOOKY WOODS
Outside the town, there are foggy, dense woods, difficult to navigate by foot due to thickets and brambles that come up to a grown man’s waist. The city council has done what they can to ban people from going into the woods, and the gruesome animal maulings are a compelling disincentive. Let the mods know when your characters are going into the spooky woods.

plotting questions!
skye/suvi is going to want to investigate what goluboy is actually doing in the mines, for which i have two potential avenues.
option 1: in the AU she believes she was sent by a rival company that she's working with in order to discover minecorp's secrets. this kind of echoes some stuff in canon, but i wasn't sure if that particular fake backstory would mesh with the plot, so i didn't wanna mention it in narration/threads until i'd run it by y'all
option 2: if option 1 doesn't mesh with the plot, i can just roll with her getting suspicious because she's suspicious by nature so she'll start to poke around on her own
i can roll with either, since regardless of the reasoning she'll be doing things like trying to conduct her own research on the area (particularly seismic activity, and trying to track down information about pre-existing mines), along with potentially investigating anything that would crop up as a discrepancy. i've worked her into the AU as a geophysicist, so she'll be following that angle with her investigation (i know nothing about geophysics so i'm mostly just relying on googling shit as i go lol).
i'm 100% down to have her caught by goluboy or anyone loyal to him during her poking around. just like, don't kill her pls

Dan Sagittarius
Player: Em
Contact Info: hotpinkcoffee on plurk and discord
Character backstory:
In this shitty little town, Dan’s a homeless drug addict who has an open warrant out for his arrest for skipping on a ten year prison sentence for abducting a child. He still never learned how to read and was raised in an anti-government bible cult in the desert, but rather than getting killed by a witch, his family was separated from him when his parents went to prison for tax delinquency and he and his siblings were split up in foster care. As a drifter in his adulthood, he’s done a bunch of odd jobs, and at one point took in a runaway pre-teen and, rather than returning her to a dangerous situation, informally adopted her and took her with him. Unfortunately, the law didn’t see it that way, and he was sentenced to ten years for kidnapping; he’s technically “on the run” but no one’s sent him back to prison yet. He’s currently struggling to get by in a town where most people assume he’s a sex predator and even those that don’t think that (rightly) assume that he’s going to use any money he gets for booze and cigarettes. He’s panhandling and shoplifting, stealing vegetables from people’s gardens, trying to make money busking or drawing caricatures on the docks, and mostly just lumping it with all the indignities of being a homeless, illiterate felon.
Business (if they own one): None
Currently living at: Street-homeless, sometimes sleeps in people’s spare rooms, strangers’ beds or in a hammock near the spooky woods
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?:Dan’s been getting by on the kindness of strangers, so it’s very likely he’s hit up your character for spare change or something to eat if he hasn’t outright stolen their wallet. The NPCs are all very vocal about the fact that they think he’s a creep who kidnapped a little girl for nefarious purposes so he’s a bit of a pariah about town; if your character has spent much time with Dan the NPC stink-eye has probably also focused on them. He’s been trying to not take advantage of anyone’s generosity too much out of fear that his bad reputation will bring down consequences on anyone he associates with.
Notes/Opt-outs: Dan’s got a lengthy opt-out list here. In this plot, there’s also likely to be some discussion of CSA although always in the context of people assuming the worst, not the worst actually having happened.

Lady Bryant
Player: Ken
Contact Info:
Character backstory:
Lady and her twin brother, Adam, were the (scandalous!) illegitimate children of the affluent, well-respected patriarch of the Bryant family. His wife was gracious enough to raise them "as her own", but their true parentage has always been widely known and discussed. Those with money and social standing may remember Lady from the dinner parties her parents used to throw. Her and her brother were constantly on display for the guests-- Lady's "unique" beauty and skill at ballet were common topics of conversation.
These days, the Bryants are known for more sorrowful reasons. Two years ago Adam went missing, causing a town-wide commotion, only for his mutilated corpse to show up in the woods a few weeks later. It is known, but not discussed (to her face, at least), that Lady is the one who initially found Adam's body. In their grief, Mr. and Mrs. Bryant decided they couldn't live in the town where their son died. Lady, however, was encouraged to stay and complete her high school education. For over a year she's been living alone in her large family home with an ample monthly allowance to pay for her needs.
Lady is known to be a unfailingly polite, charming young woman who treats everyone with a distant kindness and respect. She is said to be coping remarkably well after the death of her brother, since she is rarely seen to be anything less than well put together. Now that she's graduated high school Lady spends a large amount of her time at the dance studio. She is practicing so much that, if any adult was around to be keeping track, it would be considered unhealthy. When she isn't there, she can often be found at the library. Sometimes she's in the corner reading or at the microfilm machine, but other times she's simply helping Aziraphale keep the place running. Any attempt to ask what she's researching is met with vague allusions to an essay for Ms. Cygne's scholarship. Ms. Cygne has taken a particular interest in Lady and her future.
Unbeknownst to the town at large, or anyone other than herself (for now), Lady has become obsessed with the mysteries of her hometown. In the wake of Adam's death, she has spent the last two years quietly and exhaustively researching the town's history of animal attacks and other strange events that have occurred in the woods. Secretly, she spends hours at a time in the spooky woods as part of her dogged investigation into her brother's death.
Currently living at: The Bryant home is a McMansion that sits in a neighborhood overlooking the town, on the road that eventually leads to Ms. Cygne's home.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?: Peers would know her from school, adults could know her by her family's reputation, and scandals, or by running into her at the dance studio, the library, or when she's running her weekly errands.
Notes/Opt-outs: Elle's general permissions can be found here. This plot will be focusing on emotional neglect, predatory behavior (from Ms. Cygne), and coping mechanisms that are on the line between maladaptive behaviors and self-harm (such as her over-excersizing).

Julian Pankratz
Player: Ken
Contact Info:
Character backstory: Julian wasn't even born here! A decade ago, after completing his dual degrees (Masters in Medieval Lit and PhD in Musicology), he gave up everything to follow his on-and-off girlfriend Virginia back to the state and to her hometown to try and start his music career. Not even a two years later, with little to no success in his chosen field, they had a nasty final break-up. She threw him out for good, got a nice job in the Big City, and left the town behind. Julian wasn't so lucky. Having been disowned by his parents, and no place to live or reliable income, in eight years since the break-up, Julian has never manage to get the resources together to leave the town behind for good.
Now he is the town's resident, literal starving artist. He can be seen regularly performing at Big Top Circus' open mics, Nog's (when he can convince the proprietor to let him play), and busking on street corners. He's often in and out of the local police station for performing without a license, getting into altercations at the bar or diner, and petty theft. He still doesn't have a place to live, but has a rotation of women (married and unmarried) he sleeps with who sometimes allow him to stay the night, as well as a few people who consistently let him crash on their couch.
He has a reputation for openly flirting and sleeping with almost anyone, causing problems on purpose, being British and ~fruity~, being too educated, and getting sloppy on weeknights in the local establishments. But more than anything, he has a carefully cultivated reputation for being botherseome, but ultimately harmless.
Juliant wants out of this shithole town and is willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen.
Currently living at: anyone's bed he can talk his way into.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?: Having slept together, seeing him performing on the street, seeing him get arrested for performing on the street, he's a consistent face at the farmer's market (he is too broke to buy most of it, but he does love a good coordinated act of rebellion), chances are he has hidden behind your character to avoid getting into a bar fight, and anything else you can think of!
Notes/Opt-outs: Jaskier's opt-out.

Character backstory (what do they think their role is?):
Miguel gets to revisit the most fun era of his life by being a robotics engineering lackey of MineCorp.
A transplant from the Big City, Miguel took a job under the company on the promise that his stay would be a very temporary affair (it did not pan out that way). The shitty little town is too depressing to enjoy the comparatively cheap living expenses, and now he is Stuck Here until he can finish a project for Goluboy locked under confidentiality agreements.
He can be spotted driving in and out of the mountains with the MineCorp geologic survey team, purpose unknown. On occasion, the company truck will have some machinery or another covered with tarp or placed in locked, heavy-duty boxes. He otherwise feels rather alienated in the town, leaving him elusive and aloof to the town's problems. The few times he frequents a bar or cafe would be at the behest of his coworkers in need of a venting session.
His urgency to leave pushes him to work long hours for several days at a time (unpaid overtime, of course). The little leisure he allows himself is mostly spent reading by the docks or tinkering with some pet project or another at home. He seems to like getting aerial drone footage and photography of the lake.
Business (if they own one): Very entrenched in the MineCorp sphere
Currently living at: House with airbnb wood laminate floors and a very minimalist ikea aesthetic. It looks modern, but fairly sterile. It is part of a few recently renovated houses-for-lease near HQ.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?:
He might have bumped into them, but Miguel will be guarded and tight-lipped about his work and the details of his life. He has seen how gossip gets around.
The exception to this is anyone else in the MineCorp sphere will find sympathy for the state of things. He deeply resents his bosses and Goluboy for trapping him in his contract, though he has to be pressed to admit it. He also seems keen on giving donations to the library - whatever books or old tech he has ends up there in very nice condition.
Nonzero chance he has honked at your character to get off the road or drive faster in the MineCorp truck.
Notes/Opt-outs:
- Miguel will be a more normal sized dude (so like 6'1")
- Opt-Out is here. He will be retaining the basic gist of his backstory (fucked up family dynamics and losing his daughter) but is unlikely to talk about it off hand.

"Anna Newman"
Player: Kaylin
Contact Info: owls_in_moss on plurk
Character backstory:
Anna was born in this town, but she's determined not to die here. She's known for her sharp tongue and loud voice, and for being both a source of gossip and the target thereof. Both her parents died from animal maulings (her mother in Anna's childhood and her father just as Anna was graduating high school), and between one thing and the other she hasn't managed to scrape together the money for a bus ticket out of town. She hasn't attended the illegal Farmer's Market in ages, but she does always seem to be nearby when one is going on, calling out loudly to the sheriff and other known squealers when she spots them and giving the attendees a chance to shut their trunks and amscray. When she gets hired at the Warren Florist, no one in town is quite sure if she's trying to worm her way into Mr. Warren's good graces (or bed?) or if he's trying to take advantage of her instead. Still, when ever he throws her out or she scratches his face off, it'll feed the chin-waggers for weeks!
Business: none (works at the Diner, to be hired at Warren Florist)
Currently living at: tbd, anyone have a room to let? Either that or she's living with some NPCs.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?:
Peers who know her from school, people who know her from the florist, someone who is renting her a room, her just generally being known about town and loud as hell.
Notes/Opt-outs: Stacia's opt-out post. Most of it won't apply until they start breaking free of the plot amnesia, but let me know if you'd prefer to avoid being in a scene where it crops up.
Re: "Anna Newman"
Dan's going to get hired to manage the farm and also let a room so the gossip will be insane :3

"Louis Townsend"
Player: Kaylin
Contact Info: owls_in_moss on plurk
Character backstory:
Louis drifted into town a few years back and, unfortunately, he hasn't been able to drift back out. He did manage to get a job at the slaughterhouse which is awful in general and makes him smell bad, but also no one likes him because he's a Huge Weirdo who seems to veer wildly between "stand-offish" and "extremely loud and incredibly close". He's interested in animal anatomy and has a journal full of doodles of the Insides of Sheep and other animals, which is does not help his reputation.
He's a regular at the library, where he's read the entirety of the fantasy section and art books, and most of the rest of the books as well. He doesn't stay long (on account of the Smell) and can be found reading outside somewhere when he's not working. He also likes to take long walks in the Spooky Woods, where he seems almost happy poking at rotting logs and sticking his head into abandoned mines. He has a younger sister who's in college, he writes to her a lot but doesn't seem to get much in response.
He's also been arrested a fair few times for hitting back when hit. The man hits like a freight train, but this has not stopped drunkards and the occasional gang of rowdy teens from picking fights with him to try and make themselves look big.
Business: none (works at the slaughterhouse, to be hired at Big Top Circus)
Currently living at: renting a room somewhere, tbd. Probably ends up renting a series of rooms because eventually whoever has to deal with him on a regular basis gets sick of it.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?: You've seen him at the library or the slaughter house, or at the docks or cemetery or in the woods. Maybe you've rented him a room, or you've pulled someone off of him in a bar-brawl, or interrupted a gang of teenagers bullying him.
Notes/Opt-outs: Here. Plot will focus on blood, animal death, bullying, and estrangement from family.

Business (if they own one): None
Currently living at: One of the small rundown apartments owned by Mr. Goluboy.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?: Known at the Mine Office, seen in the library, known at Church, though the rumormill says she's going to die an old maid because no one will marry her.

Character backstory (what do they think their role is?): The Warren family, a sprawling multi generational clan of farming homebodies, have been a staple of the community as long as anyone can remember. Last winter, the entire clan perished while snowed into their farmhouse in a tragic winter storm. Consequently the black sheep of the Warren family, Aster Warren, returned from his world travels to manage the farm and wrestle with the legal pressures Goluboy is exerting in his quest to own the Warren property.
Business (if they own one): Aster does Too Much as the managing owner of the Warren farm and florist, and organizer of the Illegal Farmers Market that permits a handful of families to make some much needed cash under the table while avoiding the town's expensive business regulation. He could really use some more help, but with Goluboy bribing townsfolk to spy or strike for him, good help is hard to come by.
Currently living at: The Warren family home is a sprawling mansion of a farmhouse that's been having additional wings built in for the growing family for centuries. Now it's a dark and empty shell of a house, and Aster primarily lives in the greenhouse out back, where the emptiness is less haunting.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?: Aster makes his florist and his property easy to steal from, leaving baskets of produce and eggs in the entry of his florist and front porch of his house about a mile from the edge of town. His fields are easy to pick from, and there's an outdoor shower around the back of his greenhouse. The cave-ridden woods around his property feel more inviting than the rest of the dark hills surrounding town, and he doesn't report trespassers. He organizes the farmers market and in many ways tries to give people of the town hope and support for these lean times; however, he's not well regarded by the townsfolk, who find his world travels and education unattainable and unrelatable, his attitude aggressive and insufferable, and view his earlier attempts to turn the property into a teaching farm for the local children with suspicion. A man that interested in kids ought to be more interested in having his own than inviting other people's kids onto his property, after all, and if he cares about this town and its land so much, what business did he have leaving it for so long anyway?
Notes/Opt-outs: The ways Aster is received by the setting in this plot will include some homophobic elements and insinuations of child abuse, though none is or will be happening.

Anthony Crowley moved into town around 8 years ago, for reasons that he's chosen not to share with anyone else in town. It isn't the only thing he doesn't talk about: as far as anyone is concerned, Anthony sprung from the Earth fully formed when he moved to this shitty little town, and has no childhood or past to speak of, never mentioning parents or siblings or old friends. The only clue to his origins is his British accent and a few expensive accessories that suggest he had money once in his life.
He works in the local government office, a head for numbers leaving him responsible for various areas of budget and taxes, although he's been very careful not to look too deeply into certain things, as he suspects there's some foul play going on and knows better than to draw attention to himself.
It's very clear that he's unhappy; he has a reputation for being snarky with a quick temper, often giving the impression that he thinks he's better than everyone else, despite the fact he's stuck in this shit hole with the rest of them. In reality, he's very aware that he's disliked because of his work — it's shitty work in a shitty town — and he doesn't really blame the locals for that, so it's easier to just be an asshole in turn rather than trying to make friends when he knows he'd fail.
The rumor mill has plenty to say about how he dresses and carries himself, along with the fact that he's a bachelor in his late 40s despite a few age-appropriate women in town having made attempts to rectify that situation. The deviance is tolerated thanks to his position with the government and because he keeps his private life exceptionally private and no one has any actual proof that he's gay as fuck.
Currently living at: A small but well-kept apartment above one of the (empty?) shops in town.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?:
→ Working for the town means he's likely interacted with most people, especially business owners, but he rarely has good news or fun topics to discuss
→ Free time is spent at the coffee shop or bar, although he does his heavy drinking at home. He's around most often when there's live music
→ He will very occasionally attend the illegal farmer's market; he keeps to himself when he does, knowing that people might be suspicious of his intentions, and buys things quickly and efficiently before leaving
Notes/Opt-outs:
→ Crowley has never set foot in the church, not even for local weddings/funerals/community fairs, which has made him even more of an outsider with the locals
→ His main mode of transportation is a beat up black motorcycle; there's a Bentley tucked away in a garage somewhere that he works on during his spare time but this is another thing that he discusses with no one
→ Overall demeanor is nicer around kids, though he's careful not to come across as too friendly
→ Some gossipers claim that he's got connections to various crime families and that he's stayed in town so long because he's hiding from the law, but no one has any proof
→ Meanwhile local kids like to say that he's a vampire, and the fact that he's never seen in public (even at work) without his sunglasses doesn't help

Julian would love some company for the night, or at least a couch to sleep on. He promises to be on his best behavior (lying).
Anthony would've shown up in town just in time to watch Virginia very publicly (and humiliatingly) kick Julian out. Anthony being new, fancy, and british would have definitely piqued Julian's interest as a distraction in the aftermath of that whole thing.
Julian also avoids the church. If asked he'll say it's because their hymns are soulless embarrassments to the choral arts.

Boba Fett
Player: Ken
Contact Info:
Character backstory (what do they think their role is?): Boba is one of the newest arrivals to the town. Six months ago he was placed with into his most recent of a long line of foster families.
People don't know a lot about Boba, he tends to be sullen and defiant at best when interacting with adults, but what everyone knows is that three years ago his dad went to prison for life. Most people aren't aware of why, but the rumors say anything from drugs possession to murder, or worse. Rumors also say that Boba has already had some run-ins with the law, which isn't helped by how closely local law enforcement seems to be watching him.
The reality is that his father is a hitman and when he went to prison, Boba went into the system. He was a few months into his first group home when he ran away and disappeared for almost a year, until he was finally found working with some of his dad's old acquaintances. He's been hopping from place to place since, but it's been made clear that this family is his last chance to get his act together.
He's most often seen causing trouble with his older foster brother, Cato (note: Cato may have a humanized name, but I'm just going to call him Cato here).
Currently living at: Some suburban home that he hates with a foster family that isn't actively abusive, but is criminally neglectful.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?:
- Boba can have vandalized their property or stolen something from them.
- He's regularly harassed by the cops, even when he isn't doing anything wrong
- He likes to go poking in places he's not supposed to go, like the mine or the slaughterhouse after they're closed for the night.
- Is often out after curfew due to his foster family accidentally locking him out of the house.
Notes/Opt-outs: Boba's opt-out page. This plot will be more focused on child neglect and the aftermath of emotional and physical abuse.

Character backstory (what do they think their role is?): Army veteran who did several tours in Iraq, got disillusioned with the military bc what the hell were they even doing over there, cemented by his squad being told to put unexploded enemy ordinance in a burn pit and an accident happened and it went off. Logan is still full of so much shrapnel he sets off metal detectors. It got him honorably discharged with a VA award letter.
He went home to manage some land outside town his family owned, and settled down and married his wife, Jean, and had a daughter, Marie. But there was a long-time dispute over the land with a nearby family that caused long-term bad blood. Logan aggravated the situation with his bad temper. It came to a head when they got a gang of good ol' boys together and confronted his wife when he wasn't home. The situation was bad: a loaded house with some close friends of the family there for a bbq. The situation escalated and the dudes got out their guns and opened fire. Jean got her own gun and tried to defend the household but Logan's family and most of his friends were killed. He got home to see them all dead and fought the guys himself, exchanging fire. He killed or injured them all - but some of his daughter's friends had been walking through some fields to join the bbq and thought the pops were people playing paintball or setting off firecrackers. They walked right out of the field into Logan's fire before they could even assess the situation and run, being killed nearly instantly.
A few surviving members of the gang were charged with the girls' deaths along with all the others due to starting the situation. It didn't matter: the town knew who pulled the trigger and Logan did too. The town treats him like garbage and he stays because he thinks he deserves it. The house and land eventually got taken by the bank when Logan got depressed and started drinking instead of doing any work. He is now a deeply depressed, self-hating, and ill-tempered alcoholic and between the war and the trauma of what happened after, he's starting to show signs of PTSD.
Business (if they own one): N/a. Works at the slaughterhouse but is barely able to keep down his job.
Currently living at: A microscopic apartment over a pawn shop.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?: A few people may have been friendly with him before the incident. He lived outside of town but came into town plenty. He was a gruff, quiet guy but the type to see someone trying to carry heavy furniture up some stairs and quietly help them.
Everything changed after losing his family and the accidental deaths. He's now extremely put-offish and belligerent. He can be found at the bar, frequently in the overnight cells at the sheriff's, and sometimes gets drunk and passes out in people's lawns. He also spends a lot of time at the cemetery at the graves of his wife and daughter.
He is also easily confused with Aster Warren. They're not related at all they just both have that kind of face.
Notes/Opt-outs: here. A lot of the same ones apply.

Character backstory (what do they think their role is?): Initially a normal kid with a mostly loving but sometimes tense relationship with his single father, Abel, one day Abel was found murdered in their home and Cato was nowhere to be found. While a few speculated that the 11-year-old had harmed his father, it was thought to be unlikely given their relationship and Cato's size. The search went on for months but turned up nothing and it was assumed that Cato was likely abducted and murdered elsewhere.
A year later, Cato showed up at a bar at 1 am with a bloody shiv in hand, completely covered in blood, asking for help. The bartenders and local barflies called the police and calmed him down until the authorities came. It came out that a local business owner, army veteran, and pillar of the community was charged in the Cato's kidnapping and the murder of Abel. The full motivation is still unknown but he had physically and mentally abused him for a year. The boy eventually improvised traps and a shiv and managed to kill Leonard and escape.
The 11-year-old then bounced across various foster homes, with many of them unable to deal with his problems. While he has a naturally resilient and upbeat personality, a fear of being cornered can make him suddenly get violent. It's gotten better now that he's almost 15 but he knows he's almost struck out when it comes to homes and will be sent to some kind of facility if he pushes his luck, so he's trying to make his current foster home work.
That doesn't mean he actually behaves, just tries to get along with his foster parents. Cato is otherwise one of the town's delinquents, with major beef with the sheriff and town leadership because he thinks they botched the investigation of his father's murder and search for him after he was abducted. His abductor was his neighbor, only slightly up the street.
Business (if they own one): None but he sure vandalizes any of the ones caught doing something shady like trying not to service certain people for thin excuses that are pretty obviously any kind of bigotry.
Currently living at: The home of the Jansens, very neglectful foster parents who only do the bare minimum and seem in it for the checks. They sometimes lock him and Boba out of they're not back before curfew and are suspected of being addicted to pain killers because of how sedated they are all the time.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?: While he goes out of his way to not target anyone innocent that can't afford it, he vandalizes government buildings, fills empty lots with junk by going up to roofs and throwing appliances scavenged from the trash down for the fun of it (careful to not hit anyone), graffiti's infrastructure, and skateboards where he's not supposed to.
The sheriff hates him but he's gotten smart enough to wear a face mask and extremely indistinct clothes if he's going to extremes while misbehaving. It is common knowledge it is probably him but also it's weirdly endearing when the kid you catch spray-painting a giant middle finger raised at a caricature of the sheriff on a wall is polite to you and calls you ms. or mr. If people are charmed enough to look the other way, he is incredibly friendly to them unmasked later, without ever admitting they've met already.
He can be seen unmasked while skateboarding around with what he calls his "non-vigilante" skateboard since he uses another one for shenanigans. He loiters in various places before cheesing it to escape the popo. Sometimes he can be found hiding in people's lawns or sheds until the police finish rolling past.
He's also at the library a lot, where he often sticks little pamplets of his home-made comics about his fursona cat OC having space adventures, since clearly the shitty book collection needs to be zhuzhed up a by some quality comics. He leaves them unsigned but the bad guys are often caricatures of the town leadership. He does this knowing they go through the stacks to remove objectionable materials.
It can also be handwaved that someone has proven themselves trustworthy enough that he'll be willing to sometimes crash with them if he's locked out of his foster home. What happened to him was widely publicized and it's pretty easy to figure out he's not well cared for by his foster parents. He sometimes drags Boba along with him.
Notes/Opt-outs: opt-out A lot of the kidnapping and child abuse stuff applies here.

Character backstory (what do they think their role is?):
June was the prize daughter of a local banker. She did gymnastics, and even thought about studying it more, but decided a nice quiet life was her way. She had several best friends and her own little clique that she ran with.
But then, Mom got cancer. Gossips in the town say it was all that "weird" (read: Chinese) food that she was eating. After her mother died, her father... stopped living. June was left to take care of things herself. He died one spring night, by falling drunkenly into the lake and drowning. (There are rumors about that too.) She was all of sixteen when that happened. It sucked, a lot. June doesn't go to church, still kinda angry at God about her situation.
She works at Dick's Coffee Shop in the day, and Nog's at night, keeping an eye out for the worst alcoholics and sometimes sending them over to Auntie's to eat. Usually on her dime.
Now that she's 19, no one seems to care that she's underage and working at the bar. She lives in a dinky apartment over a closed store.
Business (if they own one): None. She works at the coffee shop and the bar.
Currently living at: Small one bedroom above one of the closed downtown stores.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?: Was your child one of her friends? Did you have business with her father? Were you one of the people who stopped by with food after either of her parents died? Are you one of the regulars at Nog's or at Dick's, where she works? Does she know your order by heart?

Character backstory: Aziraphale is your beleaguered local librarian, trying to keep this ship afloat through willpower and volunteers (for whom he is unendingly grateful)! He's doing whatever he can to make the library a welcoming public space despite the resignation and fatigue that comes from years and years of being whittled down.
Not that this stops him from being willing to lend out of his Personal Book Collection as titles get expunged from the library system.
He's hush-hush about his background apart from odd little tidbits or pieces of knowledge that he's let drop over the years. Like, he never mentions a family but every once in a great while he'll offhandedly mention his military service, or drop some weirdass extremely niche information on a topic and never explain how he learned it. He dutifully attends every church service but never talks about his like, personal religious journey or whatever. It seems to be more obligation than anything.
He's also Very Obviously Gay and has eccentric vibes, so idk maybe some of the lack of known lore is due to not being highly sought out. and definitely not due to me flying by the seat of my pants as we go, deciding things based on mood.
You could set your watch by the repeat precision of his daily routines tho.
Business: THE LOCAL LIBRARY. Normal Aziraphale would be horrified... letting people just walk out w books smh.
Currently living at: probably some squashed lil apartment that's Definitely Totally not filled with contraband books that he's secreted away or anything.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?:
Anyone who's popped into the library has at least seen/interacted with him for sure! He's pretty good with names and faces and an old hand at polite small-talk if nothing else, but also your standard "if you're looking for XYZ, I recommend this" (or. u know. "I'm terribly sorry but we aren't permitted to carry anything like XYZ, might I recommend this instead" and there's like a note left in there as a bookmark that would in some way be helpful etc). He can be called upon for minor favors of varying weirdness a lot of the time tbh, he's a people-pleaser, so I'm happy to play around with that potential!
Also I said it on plurk and I'll say it here, this is truly a man you want on call if you need a Parks and Rec style filibuster for some ungodly reason.
He also scopes that farmer's market from time to time because he likes good produce, thank u very much, and it's a bonus that it means putting money directly into local hands! And as said he does go to all the church services.
Notes/Opt-outs:
All in all I'm down to plot for anything! Relationships, noodle incidents, things to do with the setting, etc. Aziraphale's opt-out post is here, idk how much of it will come up but still.

Sam Winchester

Contact Info: litshard on Plurk, coffee_heathen on Discord
Character backstory (what do they think their role is?):
Sam moved to town only a year and a half ago. When he arrived, all he would say was that this seemed to be a good place for a lawyer who wanted to help people. He does a lot of pro bono stuff for the town, has worked with several members of the community that aren't well liked.
About six months after he moved, somebody did some research and found that Sam was engaged to be married. Made a trip back to Kansas to see his mother and brother and returned to California to the remnants of a house fire that had been set by an old roommate who had a psychotic break. The fire destroyed the house and killed his fiancee, Jessica. The insurance payout on the house is what has allowed him to set up his business in town and do what he can.
Of course, Goluboy has been doing his best to get Sam's license to practice law taken away. Something that he hasn't managed yet, but it's probably only a matter of time. Sam's getting worn down by the grind to keep going, but he isn't giving up just yet. There are too many people who need his help/.
Business (if they own one): Wesson Law Office
Currently living at: In an apartment over the office. The building was cheap when he moved there and it seemed the easiest way to handle things.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?: Did you ever need a lawyer? Ever run into a handsome guy in a suit at the coffee shop? He's 6'4", so he's noticeable. Feel free to have talked to him before!
Notes/Opt-outs: Sam's opt-outs are here, though a lot of it probably won't come up until memories start coming back in.

Dick Grayson/Nightwing
Player: Shard
Contact Info: litshard on Plurk, coffee_heathen on Discord
Character backstory (what do they think their role is?):
Dick's been known in town for years. His family used to live just outside of town during the winters, though they travelled during the summer as part of a circus. After he turned 18, he went to university to get a degree in business. He meant to help out the circus once he got his degree, while still being part of the family act. However, there was a badly done experiment in one of the science buildings where Dick was taking a class. He stayed behind to get people out, but ended up seriously injured. What exactly happened isn't known, but Dick lost about 50% of his hearing in one ear and developed a serious case of vertigo that meant he could never perform again.
The university paid him serious money to keep everything quiet, while also cleaning up the problems that the experiment had caused. And Dick, knowing this town that had been so open to him and his family when he was growing up needed something, moved back and opened a coffee shop. And also bought the building that the coffee shop is in, though that's held by a corporate front that is difficult to track down. The rents are reasonable and Dick is, ostensibly, also the handyman, helping to keep the building running.
The town has changed from when he was there before uni, though. His parents sold the house because some members of the town disliked his mother's Romani blood, a dislike that often extends to Dick for being half Romani. (Though the locals tend to use the g-slur instead.) He does his best to let it roll off his back, offering help to those who need it. A job, some food, a free coffee. Whatever he can manage. The money coming in isn't great, but it's enough to keep things running. Though, with Goluboy's interference, there's no telling how long that will last.
Business (if they own one): Big Top Circus coffee shop, home of the Strongman! Which is just a coffee with four extra shots of espresso, but it's very popular.
Currently living at: One of the apartments in the building, right above the shop. He has to avoid the windows higher up.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?: If you drink coffee, you probably know him. If you can't get a job with MineCorp or the slaughterhouse, you might work for him. Need a reasonably priced apartment? You may live in the building.
Notes/Opt-outs: Dick's opt-out is here. Some of it might come up with Dick's background in this town, but probably not until memories are back.

He also tips as well as he can and once or twice has been able to give Dick a heads up about a planned health inspection so he can be sure to pass. If questioned on it, he'd just claim that Dick's coffee is the only decent coffee in town and he's acting purely out of self interest

Character backstory (what do they think their role is?): Lowell has family roots in the town, but his parents moved away when he was young. He went into politics young and was a rising star with federal, maybe even White House ambitions, until Some Scandal ruined him. Unwilling to give up on politics entirely, a relative still in town arranged for him to be elected town manager, basically glorified secretary to the town council. Even with such a lowly position, nobody can remember voting for him in his first election, and if they've voted for him since, it's probably because he's the incumbent and only candidate for the office.
Lowell loathes the town as emblematic of how far he's fallen. He considers himself superior to everyone else, including the actual town council. He puts on a veneer of playing nice and "wanting to do right to his childhood home", but it doesn't take much for that to drop and the disgust to come out. Even during the obligatory campaign events he sometimes throws. He has been considering running for town council, mainly by probing Cygne and Goluboy and seeing which one is more open to allowing a third council member who will always vote with them and finally defeat their rival. Of course he's planning to backstab whoever gives him support and use the position to restart his rise back to his proper place, but that's probably a long way away.
Business (if they own one): None. He's a Humble Civil Servant(TM)
Currently living at: Keyes family home
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?: Distant relative maybe, or maybe someone who actually voted for him or attended one of his campaign events without being paid. Regulars at the bar are also probably familiar with him on sight.

Character backstory: Paul is not from around here. He's a corporate lawyer from a long legacy of Ivy League graduates. For him, the law is a puzzle — There's a loophole for everything, you just need to be clever enough to find it.
Once upon a time, he set off for Harvard Law with a dream to change the world for the better. The years he's spent working in corporate law have chipped away at his ethics little by little. These days, he can emotionally distance himself from his cases to the point where he stops seeing his opponent as people — Just obstacles to be maneuvered around.
Somewhere in his heart, he knows what he's doing is wrong, even if he's buried that conscience deep within himself. It manifests as anxiety and periodic panic attacks.
Outside of that, he's charming, charismatic, and friendly, albeit extremely out of touch with the townsfolk. He geuninely doesn't understand why the town is protecting Warren Family Farms so much. Have you seen the state of things around here?? This place NEEDS nicer homes!
Business: The Law Offices of Tonans, Lucis & Fulgur (currently serving Minecorp)
Currently living at: The nicer areas where Goluboy's top cronies reside.
Ways that a character might have a pre-existing relationship with them?: Anyone opposing Goluboy in court (or settling outside of court) has seen his stupid, beautiful face. He's also probably tried flirting with you before, if you're pretty and Of Age.
